For the tenth week of the graphics project we took part in a three week "weather" project.

Our brief was to show weather in a unique and different way. Personally, I found this project to be quite challenging and it was so broad and so vague, therefore at times like this research can be very useful.

I decided to research different artists, such as Daniel Buren and J.M.W Turner as their sculptures and art work focused on the idea of weather and ended up experimenting with impasto paint along the way.

I also researched how weather affects people's mood and found that people of western and eastern countries experience weather differently, as people in the west are happy when it's sunny yet sad when it's raining, while people in the eastern world on the other hand are happy in whatever weather (this however may be because their rain is warmer than ours).

The evidence I found therefore sparked ideas of Chinese styled wordplay, where the word is equivalent to its picture. I then altered this idea slightly while continuing to keep the Chinese writing however making it relate to the senses, which is shown in the picture below.

Rain - Water - Touch

Wind - Air - Hearing

Sun - Heat - Sight

Although I instantly liked the idea of the Chinese characters I did come up with different ideas such as instead of the usual blue rain drop, I tried to write the sound that the rain drops made in the shape of a rain drop instead.

I then tried to experiment with these new idea by incorporating it with the the senses. I tried to do this by placing the Chinese characters for "water" on a picture that showed touch. Then putting the Chinese characters for "heat" in the place of the eyes on another picture and finally putting the Chinese characters for "air" beside the ears to show hearing.

I then went onto design a few ideas on paper and then experimented with them digitally, which are shown below.

After discussing my ideas with fellow peers and tutors, I came to the conclusion that my designs seemed unclear to others around me. Although I understood the design perfectly, it may have become overcomplicated and therefore confusing to others, therefore I again decided to hit my sketchbook and redesign my final piece again.

I also experimented with different types of rain drop designs. I then, thankfully, came up with an idea for my final piece that both I, and my peers understood and liked after again rethinking about my idea and redesigning it as well.

For my final piece, I went for a more illustrative route where I mainly used my hands to create the finished product. I used handwritten typography as well as a different ended background as one side is finely cut using a scalpel while the other three sides of the newspaper background is torn roughly. I thought this gave the piece a different vibe which flowed with the topic of weather. I also proceeded with my original idea of the Chinese characters as shown, as well as the idea of the sound of the rain drops.

For the "3 in 2" project, which is simply to do three projects in the space of two weeks, I chose to do "constructed photo", "illustration cover" and "hidden treasures".

For the "illustration cover" project, which ended up being my favourite project out of the three, I chose to do a cover for The Economist about the topic of "media control". We were briefly asked to just create a graphic illustration that works within an established format. Personally, I have always been intrigued by the topic of "media control" and so researching it further for my project was very enjoyable and fuelled my interest. The idea process also proved to be easier than the rest of the three projects.

After designing my illustration cover I went onto use photoshop to add text and further enhance its idea of being a magazine cover by adding features such as subheading for articles within the magazine as well as the important title for that issue of the magazine.

For the "constructed photo" project I picked "sparkle" as I believed it was an interesting and diverse word that could essentially be developed into many designs. The idea was to use photography in order to communicate information. For "sparkle" I decided to focus on eyes as the first phrase that I would think of after seeing/hearing the word was "eye glimmer". Therefore I looked at anime eyes as my inspiration and decided to turn a normal human beings eyes into that of an animes.

Adding sparkles to normal eyes proved to make them look larger, more awake as well as more innocent looking, which is probably why they are so popular in the animation world.

Finally, for the "hidden treasures" project we were asked to explore London, taking pictures as evidence, and show it's beauty and uniqueness through a different way, by constructing and putting photos that we took while on our journey together.

For this project I decided to combine the "normal everyday thing" with the "fascinating new thing". I did this by using the pictures that I took on my day out in London to create two pictures within one showing the everyday and new, showing the hidden treasures that we have all around us.

For example my design of the costa cup with the picture of the bright sun combines the everyday routine of having a normal drink however adds the new element of seeing a bright scenery.

During the data translation project, we were given the option to use the final project that we produced for the wayfinding and mapping project, however I decided to start afresh.

After researching different topics as well as exploring my interests, I decided to base my idea on movies as I was, and generally am interested in the graphics side of the industry (posters), but more specifically on the idea of movie remakes.

I started my project by researching many different types of movie remakes and their production status and values, which included the budget, box office result, year it was made/released in as well as the country it was originally made in then the country it was remade in. I also researched artists and designers such as Matt Needle, who creates alternative styled posters for many different types of movies, and so this led me onto research the topic of alternative posters as I liked how they were so clean looking and straight to the point, which I hoped my final design to be.

Therefore I decided to base my data translation project on alternative movie posters, and so design it in that way as well as I hoped that it would be very minimalistic, straight to the point yet very pleasing to look at.

In order to design my ideas I researched the different types of genres that there were in film, such as horror, adventure, romance, fantasy, comedy etc. And I also researched the different colours and images that were associated with these genres, such as a sword/gun for action/adventure etc. Through this I was able to design three my final pieces which are shown below.

The three facts that I found from my research and that I used in my designs were,

"The US is the leading country which remakes the most amount of movies, whether they are foreign or US originals."

"Only 13% of people prefer movie remakes, while a huge 61% of other people like the original to the movies. Meanwhile, quite a few number of people, (26%), do not actually mind whether the movie is an original or a remake."

"The average budget for an original movie is $11,459,375, while the average box office income is $28,774,942. Whereas the average budget for a remake is $89,718,750 but the average for a box office for a remake is $131,427,508."
