During the data translation project, we were given the option to use the final project that we produced for the wayfinding and mapping project, however I decided to start afresh.
After researching different topics as well as exploring my interests, I decided to base my idea on movies as I was, and generally am interested in the graphics side of the industry (posters), but more specifically on the idea of movie remakes.
I started my project by researching many different types of movie remakes and their production status and values, which included the budget, box office result, year it was made/released in as well as the country it was originally made in then the country it was remade in. I also researched artists and designers such as Matt Needle, who creates alternative styled posters for many different types of movies, and so this led me onto research the topic of alternative posters as I liked how they were so clean looking and straight to the point, which I hoped my final design to be.
Therefore I decided to base my data translation project on alternative movie posters, and so design it in that way as well as I hoped that it would be very minimalistic, straight to the point yet very pleasing to look at.
In order to design my ideas I researched the different types of genres that there were in film, such as horror, adventure, romance, fantasy, comedy etc. And I also researched the different colours and images that were associated with these genres, such as a sword/gun for action/adventure etc. Through this I was able to design three my final pieces which are shown below.
The three facts that I found from my research and that I used in my designs were,
"The US is the leading country which remakes the most amount of movies, whether they are foreign or US originals."
"Only 13% of people prefer movie remakes, while a huge 61% of other people like the original to the movies. Meanwhile, quite a few number of people, (26%), do not actually mind whether the movie is an original or a remake."
"The average budget for an original movie is $11,459,375, while the average box office income is $28,774,942. Whereas the average budget for a remake is $89,718,750 but the average for a box office for a remake is $131,427,508."
